Unfortunately, due to mental illness he was unable to complete the envisioned series which would have spanned the titular characters life. A classic trilogy of books he released in his life and a novella form his contribution to the franchise. In The Hall Of Bright Mountain Carvings is a nice song about the book series by Mervyne Peake, Gormenghast.
